Is my Roof Suitable for Solar Panels?

Harness the power of the sun and generate sustainable electricity with solar panels. But is your roof suitable for them? Fortunately, many homes in the UK are ready to have solar panels installed, thanks to most roofs being angled between 30-50°, but there are several other important criteria to know about before having the panels installed.

This blog is your guide to answering ‘Is my roof suitable for solar panels?’ We’ll cover roof materials, direction, how many panels are best for your home and other considerations.

Roof Materials

One of the first factors to consider is what material your roof is made from, as certain roof materials present risks and cost considerations. The material of your roof will determine the ease of installation and long-term performance of the solar photovoltaic (PV) system.

Best Roof Materials for Solar Panel Installation

While most roof materials are suitable for solar panels, some materials are naturally more compatible than others.

  • Tile roofs: Solar panels can be securely attached without major structural work. Whether clay or concrete, tile roofs are among the easiest for installation.
  • Slate roofs: While still suitable for solar panels, slate roofs require more care during installation to avoid damage.
  • Metal roofs: One of the most compatible materials; metal roofs offer excellent longevity and make mounting solar panels simple.
  • Asphalt roofs: Also called composite roofs, solar panel installation is made easy with this material.

Thatched and glass roofs are not suitable for solar panels, as thatched roofs pose a fire risk and glass is not strong enough to support the weight of the panels.

Material Considerations for Solar Panels

Beyond the type of material, the roof’s condition and durability need consideration. Fragile materials, such as old slates or deteriorating tiles, may not withstand the installation process or long-term panel weight. Some materials may also require specialist mounting kits, which could affect installation cost and complexity. It’s important to know your roof is structurally sound and able to bear the weight of panels and mounting equipment for a safe and long-lasting PV system.

Roof Direction

Power efficiency is crucial for solar energy, and the orientation of your roof plays a key role. The sun’s path in the UK means some roof directions capture more energy than others, so understanding your roof’s direction will help you maximise the return on your investment.

Best Roof Direction for Solar Panels

South facing roofs are generally ideal as they receive the most sunlight throughout the day. South-east and south-west orientations are also effective, providing a good balance of morning and afternoon sun. With southern-facing roofs, solar panels can generate the maximum electricity possible for your home, helping to reduce energy bills and reliance on the grid.

Considerations for Roof Direction When Installing Solar Panels

Not every roof will be directed south, but this doesn’t mean you can’t have solar panels installed. Partial installations or adjusting the angle of the panels can still provide you with sustainable energy. East or west-facing roofs can work well for homes with high morning or afternoon electricity usage and will still provide an ample amount of energy throughout the day.  You can also make the best of your east or west-facing roof by having solar battery storage installed, with this stored energy then deployed when the sun is casting on the other side of the roof.

North-facing roofs are the odd ones out and generally aren’t suitable for solar panel installation. However, this isn’t the end of your solar journey, as advancements in technology and installation methods mean even north-facing roofs can still harness the power of the sun.

Consider when you use the most energy and align this with your roof’s direction. Ultimately, even if your roof isn’t perfectly south-facing, solar panels can still be worthwhile, especially with modern, high-efficiency panels that capture lower-angle sunlight.

Roof Size

The size of your roof directly affects how many solar panels you can install and how much electricity your PV system can generate. A larger roof will allow for a bigger system, which can drastically reduce energy bills. However, not every part of your roof may be usable due to shading, chimneys or other obstacles.

Calculating How Many Solar Panels Can Fit Your Roof

To determine the number of solar panels to install on your roof, you will need to, or have professionals, measure the available area and match that with the size of the individual panels. Sizes can vary, but the general size for a 300-watt panel is 92 x 165 cm. To work out how many solar panels can power your home, divide your usable space by the panel dimensions to estimate the capacity. It’s also important to factor in spacing for maintenance and air flow.

Other Roof Considerations

Moving on from material, direction and size, there are other important factors that influence whether your roof is suitable for solar panels. These include the angle, condition, structural capacity, shading and legal requirements like planning permission.

Angle of Your Roof

Panels mounted at the right angle will maximise their efficiency throughout the year. A good benchmark to hit is a pitch of 30-40°, though slightly steeper or shallower roofs can also be effective.

Can Solar Panels Be Installed on Flat Roofs?

Flat roofs are suitable for solar panels thanks to the use of mounting frames that tilt the panels towards the sun. Solar panels installed on a flat roof also provide the benefit of easier maintenance access, and the correct positioning allows maximum sunlight capture without the downside of shading.

Insulation and Structural Space

Each roof material will feature different thicknesses because of the insulation, and this factor, along with the space beneath the roof deck, can influence installation. Adequate clearance ensures that wiring and mounting equipment don’t interfere with insulation or ventilation, helping to prevent heat build-up and maintain energy efficiency.

Age and Condition

It goes without saying that older roofs, or those in poor condition, may require repair or replacement before solar panel installation. Fixing panels to weak or ageing roofs could reduce lifespan or compromise safety, so ensuring your roof is structurally sound is essential.

External Shading

You will also need to factor in nearby trees, your chimney and neighbouring buildings before installation, as even partial shading caused by these can impact energy output.

Does Solar Panel Installation Require Planning Permission?

Planning permission is often the bane of homeowners looking to make improvements. Fortunately, you won’t have to apply for planning permission for solar panels, as it falls under permitted development. You will need planning permission if your home is a listed property or is within a conservation area. It doesn’t hurt to check with your local council first, just in case.
